Learn about LASIK

What is LASIK?

LASIK is short for “Laser In Situ Keratomileusis.” It is the dominant and preferred refractive surgery the world over and is accomplished in three steps.

Step 1 A special instrument (the microkeratome) is used to create a thin, hinged flap of corneal tissue.

Step 2 A cool laser (the VISX Star S4) is used to perform the refractive correction by reshaping the deeper cornea. This step is guided by a computer programmed by the doctor using each person’s individualized, corrective data.

Step 3 The corneal flap is replaced – without stitches – restoring the eye to its natural and pre-procedure state.

What is PRK?

PRK is short for “Photorefractive Keratectomy.” It was the first refractive surgery to be widely applied around the world and is performed in three, painless steps:

Step 1 The thin outer layer of the cornea is removed.

Step 2 The refractive correction is performed on the deeper cornea with the excimer laser.

Step 3 The corneal layer is replaced and a disposable contact lens is inserted into the eye to be left there until the surface of the cornea has healed over.

What is NearVision CK?

NearVision CK is an exciting advancement in vision correction. It corrects vision for patients over 40 years of age who have had wonderful vision for their entire lives, but now struggle with their near vision and wish to be able to read without the assistance of reading glasses. No laser is used in this procedure, but rather a controlled release of radiofrequency (RF) energy, so there is no cutting involved and recovery time is faster.

Step 1 Numbing eye drops are applied to the eye.

Step 2 The treatment pattern is imprinted on the eye with a rinse-away dye.

Step 3 A hair-thin instrument is used to apply the RF energy to the cornea, tightening around it like a belt and improving near vision.

Is LASIK for Me?

A good candidate for LASIK is 18 years or older, has stable vision, healthy eyes and vision problems within the range of treatment. An initial, free consultation will help you and the doctor decide on the best procedure for you.

What vision problems can LASIK correct?

LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. 98% of patients receiving LASIK have been given vision that allowed them to pass a driving test without the use of glasses or contacts.

How long does it take to perform a LASIK procedure?

LASIK is performed as an outpatient procedure using “eye drop” anesthetic to numb the eye. The entire procedure normally takes less than 30 minutes, with the patient leaving shortly thereafter.

How soon can I resume my daily activities after LASIK?

Most patients are able to resume virtually all activities the next day.
